Gert Huskens obtained a MA in History with distinction following a dissertation on Belgian imperialism in China during the Boxer War. Additionally, he also acquired an MSc in Comparative and International Politics analyzing civil society participation in contemporary debates on international development. Combining his expertise as a historian and political scientist, Huskens has a broad interest in social, political and cultural aspects of modern international and intercultural history. His main research focus in this regard aims at the histories of colonialism, decolonization and postcolonialism. In this context, Huskens co-authored a forthcoming contribution on the legacy of Patrice Lumumba in rap music for an edited volume on the artistic resonance of Lumumba. He also contributes regularly to the postcolonial debates in Belgian and Dutch media through opinion pieces, blogs, lectures and interviews.
